about
i am a fifth grade bilingual teacher. i pour every ounce of my energy into my teaching and sometimes it makes me a little crazy. i paint, draw and print to make the crazy a little calmer.
common themes in my work include Islamic floral motifs, Mexican folklore and iconography, Moroccan superstition, human anatomy, and song lyrics. i am obsessed with details, aesthetics and color. i like the simplicity of nature and the complexity of culture. when the two mix, i can barely contain myself.
i have no formal art training. i have loved art since i was a kid and returned to it once i was in college. i did graphic design work for wide open records for several years and occasionally contribute to cósmica artists. i took a tempera workshop in xalapa, méxico in 2004, began painting with acrylics in 2005, and learned how to print with linoleum in 2006. most recently i have learned how to screenprint thanks to paul from the decoder ring and the boys from horchata design syndicate. i have an extreme preference for smooth lines, asymmetry, anatomical accuracy, subtle textures and sparing color. i loathe conceptual art and wish i knew how to embroider.
